Larry McGary, a lifelong Hoosier and unforgettable character, passed away on May 15, 2025 at the age of 76 in Indianapolis.
Born and raised in the city he always called home, Larry graduated from Warren Central High School.
Larry's work ethic was unmatched. He started out at Mayflower, then served as a firefighter, later transitioned into heating and cooling, and ultimately found his calling as a Local 22 iron worker—a job he proudly held until his retirement in 2010.
Outside of work, Larry knew how to enjoy life. He had a deep love for fishing, and his eyes lit up talking about drag and midget car racing. He was a force at the card table, always ready with a good bluff and a better story. Larry was also a devoted bowler and the proud owner of a 1966 Barracuda—which he often showed at various car shows and even won 1st place awards for.
He was humorous and had a unique way of seeing the world that left a lasting impression on everyone who met him. Larry lived life on his own terms, and those lucky enough to know him will never forget his wit, his stories, and his stubbornness.
He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Janice L. (Scurlock) McGary; his father, Raymond L. McGary; and his sister, Karen S. Melvin.
He is survived by his mother, Doris McGary; his children, Dana (Ronnie) Sawyer, Dawn (Steve) Wade, Doug (Kari) McGary, Denise (Joseph Heidelberger) McGary; his grandchildren, Lauren (Billy) Hall, Danica Heidelberger, Lila Heidelberger, Steven (Christina) Wade; greatgrandchildren, Ava Sawyer, Kaiden Hall, Kaysen Kopp, Steve “Tres” Wade, Sophia Wade, Silas Wade, Sutton Wade; and his siblings, Nancy (Rick) Phelps and Michael (Laura) McGary.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025, from 10:00AM-12:30PM at Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington St. Indianapolis, IN, 46229. Funeral service will follow at 12:30PM. Larry will be laid to rest with his late wife, Janice, at Washington Park East Cemetery.
