Larry J Callahan 69, Indianapolis, passed away on June 19, 2010, following a long courageous battle with cancer.
He was born to his parents Robert J Callahan and Delorys Evelyn Knepp on April 17, 1941, in Peru, Indiana on Good Friday in his grandmother’s bed as the house was being built around them. Following graduation in 1959, he joined the military and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. For two years he was stationed in Japan at YoKoda AFB with the 56th Weather Recon Squadron. Returning stateside to McConnel AFB in Wichita, KS, where he met his lifelong sweetheart, Roberta “Jean” Hill. They married on July 15, 1964, and were blessed a few years later with their only child, Michael Duane. During their time in Kansas, Larry worked for Western Auto Supply as a stockman, loader and truck driver. He enjoyed driving a truck and in 1969 relocated his family to Oklahoma City to accept a position with Trans Con Lines as an OTR driver. Life progressed and Indianapolis was their next move in 1972. When the company folded in 1990, Larry continued in the industry as a driver with PIE, Roadway, and Consolidated Frt. Ways until his retirement in 2000. Larry was a loyal union member with Local 135 Teamsters during his active working years and served as Union Steward, co-director of TC annual reunion and enjoyed interaction with co-worker so much that he remained an active part of the local’s retiree club. His hobbies included bowling with Mooresville and Crestwood Senior leagues at Western Bowl. He delighted in time at home with Jean, their three cats and loyal canine companion, Logan. He enjoyed watching TV, working in his yard, and tinkering around the house. Larry passed away peacefully at home with Jean, Michael, and Logan by his side. He was always there to help a neighbor and would lend a hand to anyone in need. Larry was truly a joyful person with a kind heart and gentle spirit. Family and friends will sadly miss him.
He is survived by his wife Roberta Jean Callahan (Hill), son Michael Callahan, brothers Daniel Callahan (Linda), George Callahan (Sheri) and Frank Callahan, nephews Chris Callahan (Renee), Craig Callahan (Michele), Robert Callahan, Roger Callahan and nieces Darla Larkin (Leo), Michelle Carter, Angela Golden and brother-in-law Charles Bales (Debbie).
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contribution in his name made be made to American Cancer Society.
A joint memorial service will take place 10 a.m. Monday, July 31, 2023, at Flanner Buchanan – Decatur Township, 5463 Kentucky Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46221, with burial to follow in Corinth Brethren Cemetery in Twelve Mile, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the same location.
