Lalanne Beale Barber, entered this world on March 21, 1940, in Augusta, Georgia. She departed this world and went to be with the Lord on January 13, 2026.
Although it is impossible to fully account for the impact Lalanne has made, her life was characterized by consistency and discipline and focused on faith, family, freedom, and facts – and always with her signature flair.
At the age of 15, she dedicated her life to her Lord and Savior and, as she said, that changed the trajectory of her life. For 70 years, her days were filled with serving God in her daily life and in the life of the church. For 40 years she was a pastor's wife, playing the organ and piano, leading the choir, teaching Sunday School, and organizing Vacation Bible School. She volunteered at a Senior Living Community organizing Sunday services, movie nights, and other activities. Most recently she was a volunteer in children's Sunday school at Colonial Hills Baptist Church and a regular participant in the ladies’ Bible studies at church and in her neighborhood.
Lalanne was blessed with 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren (with an 8th on the way) and actively participated in their endeavors. Everything from attending her children's sporting and school events (often with handmade posters and cowbell at the ready) to riding in a horse-drawn chariot in her granddaughter's Westernaires show, Lalanne was thrilled to join in the family fun.
Her appreciation for our country's freedom was expressed in her fascination with her ancestors’ journey to America and their role in early colonial Georgia. She was patriotic, loved American history (particularly World War II history), and found joy in celebrating our nation and its freedom.
Those who spent time with Lalanne know that the facts matter. Known for her penchant for details and her ability to recall them in perfect chronological order, or so close that nobody had reason to doubt, Lalanne used her sharp mind to elevate conversations and curiosities.
Lalanne’s focus on faith, family, freedom, and facts were made more vibrant and memorable by her signature flair. When most people might ask an employee, "What do you do here?" Lalanne would inquire, "What is your association with this establishment?" Why ask someone to move their arm out of the way when, in Lalanne style, you could say, "Please move your appendage?" Her flair was ever-present in her vocabulary, her well-coordinated outfits, her alphabetized and chronologically cataloged DVD and CD collection, and her museum-like home decor. Her flair was a lovely accessory to her disciplined and consistent character focused on faith, family, freedom, and, yes, facts.
Lalanne was preceded in death by her parents, Wally and Sally Beale, and her husband, William Barber, Sr. She is survived by her 5 children and their families: Bill and Marti Barber and their sons, Justin (Jenna and children, Avery, Aria, and Max), Tyler (Taylor), and Luke (Kasey and daughter, Kallie); David Linden and Allison Barber; Beth and Rick Swicker and their daughters, Shannon Schulte (Ben), and Lauren Swicker (sons, Michael and Andrew); Mary and Glenn Van Horn and their children, Kyle (Selena and son, Ford) and Emily Kilroy (Kirby); and Joshua and Lauren Barber and their children, Brynn, Benjamin, and Cameron. Lalanne is also survived by her siblings, Latrelle Francis, Linda Porter, Burgin Beale (Beverlee), and Lisa Niblock (Marc) and their families.
The memorial service will be held Monday, January 19, 2026, at Colonial Hills Baptist Church, 8140 Union Chapel Road, Indianapolis, Indiana. Visitation begins at 12:00 p.m. Service begins at 1:00 p.m. Flowers may be sent directly to the church.
