Kyung “Nan” Claywell, 89 of Carmel, passed away at her home Monday, April 4, 2022. Nan was born January 12, 1933 in Daegu, Korea to the late Soo Bong Chung and Pan Duk Kim, one of seven children. She immigrated to the United States and became a naturalized American Citizen in 1959. She was also a proud military spouse, having married Herb Claywell in 1967. After coming to the United States, she and her husband served as the catalyst for the immigration of several family members to the US. Members of Nan’s extended family now live coast to coast, excelling in business, education, or other careers.
After graduating from the American School in May 1959, Nan received her beautician’s license in October of 1963. Nan worked as a beautician until her retirement in 2000. After retirement, Nan would volunteer at local nursing homes to assist residents with their hair styles and regale them with her stories…she loved telling stories! She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, and caring for her adopted dogs. She donated many of her handmade items to Riley Hospital for Children.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, April 9 at Flanner Buchanan-Carmel, where family and friends are invited to gather from 10:00 am until the time of the service.
Nan was the widow of Herbert E. Claywell. She is survived by her two adopted sons, Seung Kyu (wife, Youn Suk) Claywell and Seung Lee (wife, Angela Rollins) Claywell; grandchildren, Ja and Umi Claywell, Nathan Donaldson, and Sasha Rollins; sisters, Choon Hi Chung and Choon Ja Yi.
Memorial donations in Nan’s name can be sent to the Humane Society of Indianapolis http://indyhumane.org/ or the Korean Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis [email protected] .
