Kum Suk Ellis, 73, of Fishers, Indiana, passed away at her home on February 13, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Kum Suk was born on December 13, 1952, and grew up in a small village in Gwangju, where she was raised alongside her three brothers and three sisters. Her mother was fierce and strong-willed, and her father was soft-spoken, patient, and kind. Together, they created a home filled with love for one another and for their children. Her upbringing in this close-knit family instilled in her the values of kindness and compassion that she embodied throughout her life.
As a young girl, she cherished spending time in the mountains near her village, camping with her close friends. She loved the warmth of the sun and found joy in the beauty of nature's simple moments that reflected her gentle and appreciative spirit.
She met the love of her life, Edward J. Ellis, in Seoul. They married and later moved to San Francisco, California, where their beloved daughter, Heidy Ellis, was born. When Ed was transferred to Indiana while serving in the United States Army, Kum Suk embraced a new chapter of life. There, she formed lasting friendships and built a warm and welcoming home.
For 20 years, Kum Suk proudly owned the Meridian Plaza Deli, where she became a cherished figure among her customers, the staff and the community alike. Her commitment to her business was unwavering, and she took immense pride in renaming the deli to "Meridian Plaza Deli - Heidy Inc." for her daughter to carry on the family legacy. This act was a testament to her deep love and support for her family.
A devout Christian, Kum Suk's faith was the cornerstone of her existence. It guided her actions and allowed her to be a beacon of hope and support for many. She embraced every opportunity to share her love and wisdom, encouraging those around her to find strength in their beliefs.
She was an expert gardener, pouring her love into her plants, and could often be found tending to her garden, nourishing it with the same care she extended to her family and friends. Her culinary skills in the kitchen were legendary, as she prepared meals filled with love that brought joy to those fortunate enough to enjoy her cooking.
Kum Suk is survived by her loving husband, of 44 years, Edward “Ed” Ellis; daughter, Heidy Ellis; and many other cherished family members and dear friends, who will continue to honor her spirit and cherish the beautiful memories they created together.
The visitation for Kum Suk will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, located at 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250.
