Kenneth Raymond Haupt
Kenneth R. Haupt, 76, of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away after a long fight against pancreatic cancer. He was born on January 22, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Raymond and Alberta Haupt.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Judy Haupt; son, Ken (Ann) Haupt; daughter, Patty (Leigh) Evans; son, Tim (Marcella) Haupt; grandchildren, Kailey Evans, Kortni Haupt, CJ Haupt, Michael Haupt, Mandy Haupt, Bailey Evans.
Ken was one of the winningest high school football coaches in the State of Indiana. During his 37-year career as a Head Coach, he compiled a record of 216-124-2. During that time, he was a motivator, teacher and coach to the young men at three different high schools: Elder High School in Cincinnati, OH (7 years), Merrillville High School in Merrillville, IN (9 years) and Southport High School, Indianapolis, IN (17 years).
He was inducted into the Indiana High School Football Hall of Fame in June 2003, led Southport to a Sectional Championship in 1985 and a trip to the Class 5A semi-state game in 1990. In 1976, Haupt led the Merrillville Pirates over Indianapolis Cathedral to win the Class AAA State Football Championship, and in 1972.
Haupt was voted Coach of the Year in two states during his career. In 1976 and 1985 the Indiana Football Coaches Association voted him the Coach of the Year. In 1972, the Ohio Football Coaches Association voted him Coach of the Year and in 1973 named him to coach the West All Star Team in Cincinnati, OH. During his coaching career, Haupt coached over 200 young men who continued their careers at both the college and professional levels.
In 2017, Ken was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. The Sagamore of the Wabash Award is the highest honor, which the Governor of Indiana bestows. It is a personal tribute usually given to those who have rendered a distinguished service to the state or to the governor.
A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 11 a.m. with calling from 10 a.m. at St. Roch Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in memory of Ken be made to either St. Roch Catholic Church, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
