Indianapolis, Indiana – Kathryn J. Smith, 95, passed away while being comforted by her son on May 16, 2026. Her kindness, her generosity, and her love will be forever missed.
Kathryn was born on July 27, 1930, to parents Fred John & Vivian (Bley) McMillan in Indianapolis, Indiana. She graduated from Warren Central High School in 1948, but prior to that, went to work for a local insurance company to help support her family. She stayed with that company for over 45 years until her retirement.
Most importantly, she married Laverne John Smith on November 5, 1950. They spent 54 years together until his passing in 2004. They enjoyed spending as much time together as they could, with both getting their radio operating licenses and joining the Amateur Radio Association and the Owen’s County Amateur Radio Club, where Kathryn was the Secretary and Treasurer for many years. She was also a long-time volunteer at In God’s Arms Mission Store, looking forward to her Thursday workdays.
Kathryn’s even temper and kindness made her a friend to many, despite her soft-spoken shyness. She rarely ever said a bad word about anyone and personally loved nurturing children.
When she had a moment to relax, she loved to crochet and was a very talented seamstress. She also enjoyed spending time at her house in Spencer, Indiana and the vacations she took with her son, John, after Laverne passed. Kathryn loved to play cards and put together 1,000-piece puzzles with her friends.
Kathryn is survived by her son, John C. Smith; and cousins Shonda Walker, Rick Olsen Sr., Randi Olsen, Sherri Dunkerson, and Daniel Thomas Dunkerson.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229) from 11 – 1 pm with funeral services following at 1 pm.
