Surrounded by the love of her family, Kathryn Melville (Weesner) Miller quietly slipped from this life on January 13, 2016. Kathryn, known to family and life-long friends as “Melville”, was born in Bradenton, Fl. on February 27, 1924.

She was the only child of Ida Mell (Patten) and Walker Jay Weesner. Shortly after her birth, they moved to the Indianapolis area. Kathryn attended the Indianapolis Public Schools and was raised in the Irvington Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Howe High School in 1942 and went on to graduate DePauw University in 1946. Having met when they were 12 years old, Kathryn married John Bradley Miller on August 23, 1947. John, a WWII pilot and veteran, pre-deceased Kathryn in 2006.

The couple continued to reside in the Irvington area of Indianapolis where they raised their family of four children. Surviving Kathryn and John are Kathryn (Kit) Paternoster of Greenfield, IN., Melinda (Nathan A) Clark of Fountaintown, IN., Bruce (DeDe) Miller of Greenfield, IN. and Jay K. Miller of Floyds Knobs, IN.

She is survived by 6 grandchildren: Amie (Dan) Waldeck, Gayle Dorsel, Nancy Martin, Kimberly (Frank) Isbill, Jessica Miller and Dawna Miller. There are 5 great-grandchildren: Evan, Madeline, Kennedy, Connor and Paige.

Kathryn taught in the public school system and ultimately received a Master’s Degree from Butler University. At the time of her retirement in 1990, she had been the Supervisor of Library and Media Services for the Indianapolis Public School System.

Throughout her life she participated in many organizations. In college she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was also a member of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter V, a member of the Irvington Historical Society, the Irvington Dramatic Club, the Benton House Association and a DAR member. In her retirement, she served as a volunteer with the President Benjamin Harrison Home and was a docent for Indiana Landmarks. She also volunteered at Community Hospital and Hancock Regional Hospital.

The center of Kathryn’s life was her family. An intelligent and accomplished woman, she was the family’s moral and ethical North Star. Her life was a gift to all who knew her.

Arrangements are made with Flanner and Buchanan- Memorial Park at 9350 E Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46229. Calling will be on Tuesday January 19 from 4-8pm. The funeral will take place at 11am on Wednesday January 20 with interment following at Memorial Park Cemetery.
