Katherine B. Schwomeyer

January 23, 1923 — February 27, 2024

Indianapolis, Indiana

Katherine "Katie" B. (Mote) Schwomeyer, 101 of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on February 27, 2024.

She was born on January 23, 1923, in Spiceland, Indiana to Orestes Ledru Mote and Katherine (Gladfelter) Mote.

She grew up on a small farm in Spiceland with wheat fields and apple orchards. She was a talented artist who worked as the art editor on the high school paper and yearbook (The Spiceonian). She was also Vice-President of her senior class of 1941. After high school, she went on to graduate from Indiana Business College in the early 1940’s and began working at Trojan Hosiery Mills and Real Silk. Katie later worked at several insurance companies including Banker’s Life and People’s Home Life. She later worked for the Indiana State Government from which she retired.

Katie met her future husband Robert (Bob) Schwomeyer when he was home on leave from the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. She had already met his sisters and his parents through co-workers at Real Silk. Dad had just returned home from the war and was there when Mom walked in the front door for a visit. Ever the perfect gentleman, he stood up to greet her. They were married in May of 1948. They had three children, Vivian, Kurt, and Norman.

Katie was an avid reader. She loved art, gardening, music crossword puzzles, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy. She was always wanting to learn new things and believed that one should learn something new each day.

Katie is survived by daughter Vivian Yeager (husband Mike), son Norman (wife Kerri), three grandsons that she loved dearly: Grant and Brett (Norman and Kerri’s sons) and Kyle (Kurt’s son). Katie is also survived by her beloved sister Miriam Mote Burnette of Ohio and many nieces and nephews that were dear to her heart.

She will always be remembered for her kindness, compassion, loyalty and love for her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Katie was preceded in death by her husband Bob, son Kurt, and granddaughter Allison (Kurt’s daughter).

We wish the thank Community Hospice team for their comfort and compassionate care given to Katie and her family.
