Katherine Taeko Loudenback Winstead of Indianapolis went to be with God at 4:20 a.m. June 19, 2023. Her father was by her side, quietly sending up a prayer. She was 37.
It was angiosarcoma that took her life. This rare and aggressive cancer in the end defied treatments, but Kayte’s will to live was undaunted by a grim prognosis she refused to accept. She inspired others as she stared cancer down, lived, loved, laughed and fought.
Kayte spent her final day on earth surrounded by people sharing stories of her life: laughing, crying, singing in her ear, stroking her hair, saying goodbye.
Kayte was fierce and feisty, irreverent and devoted, sweet and whip-smart. That smile! She was grounded in her faith, her loving family and a legion of friends who have surrounded her with care and support the past three years, and her whole life through.
Kayte graduated from Cardinal Ritter High School in 2004, attended Ball State University and was studying to be a medical assistant when cancer struck. She worked 15 years in the food service industry, several years with Lew White Tours and two years at IU Health. She was a Fowling enthusiast, and an avid hiker. She loved the month of May, family and friend gatherings, music, movies, coaching little league baseball, bowling, the New York Yankees, and the Indianapolis Colts.
Kayte’s survivors include her husband, Johnnie Winstead Ill; her precious daughter, Laura Lynne Loudenback; her parents, Ken and Kim Loudenback; her brother, Trevor Hunstman Davis; her sister, Laura Ashley Loudenback; her grandmother, Deanna Hunstman Lane; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins who are missing her so and will love her forever. To the moon and back.
Kayte was preceded in death by two grandmothers, Marilyn Huntsman Oakes and Taeko lijima Loudenback; an aunt, Patsy Tipps Murray, and other family members dear to her.
