Karl Edward Steegmann, 83, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on June 4, 2018. He was born October 8, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio to Albert “Ted” and Francis Steegmann; one of 3 siblings.
Though born in Cleveland, Karl spent most of his life in Kansas. After high school, he attended Kansas City University before joining the United States Army. Upon his separation with the Army, Karl received his MBA from Indiana University. Karl put his college degree to work. He worked for Eli Lilly as an Industrial Engineer until his retirement in 2000. He married Helen Price Steegmann on April 17, 1963 until her passing on January 8, 2008; they spent 40 beautiful years together. Karl was lucky enough to find love again. He met his second wife, Pam, through Meridian Street United Methodist Church. The two became quick friends, but didn’t realize their love for each other until Pam reconnected many years later for a job reference. She got the job and as a thank you, she took Karl out for dinner and the rest is history. They were married just 8 months later in 2010 and built a beautiful life together. Family remembers him as a take charge kind of guy with an affinity for British cars. Karl was an avid bicyclist and history buff; he particularly enjoyed war history. He was a handyman who was always willing to take on new projects or assist others, especially if it is something he had never tried before. Though all of these things describe Karl and the full life he lived, he can best be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, uncle, and friend. Even his doctor described him as not only a gentleman but as a gentle man. He was one of a kind and will be truly missed by all who had the honor of meeting him.
Karl is preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Helen. Surviving to cherish his memory are wife, Pamela; children, Edward Price Steegmann, Meghan (Michael) McCully, Colin Ballast, Mandy (Brad) Huber; siblings, Ted (Ruth) Steegmann, Sara York; grandchildren, William, Braedon, Everett, Callahan; as well as a host of extended family and friends who were more like family.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service June 11 at 11 AM at Meridian Street United Methodist Church, 5500 N. Meridian Street Indianapolis, Indiana 46208 with calling beginning at 9 AM. Karl will be privately laid to rest at Washington Park North Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family ask for contributions to be made to Freeweelin’ Community Bikes, 3355 N. Central Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46205.
