Karen Weigand Eakins

May 1, 1940 — April 2, 2015

Karen Weigand Eakins, 74, passed away peacefully on April 2 at her home in Carmel, surrounded by her beloved family. She will long be remembered for her sunny disposition, ready smile, infectious laugh and friendly manner. She was loyal and caring to her many friends to whom she faithfully sent birthday cards or just a little note to say hello. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and a lifetime member of Fairview Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon and taught Sunday school. She was an active member of the Woodpark Neighborhood Social Association, loved shopping with her friends, going for long car rides, having lunch with high school friends or sorority sisters, playing bridge and spending time in Florida. While at School 86 and also at Shortridge High School, Karen was a Girl Scout whose troop #43 sold enough cookies to sail on the Queen Mary to Europe and tour for 2 months. They had a wonderful reunion several years ago in California where the ship is now moored. She was very athletic, whether swimming on the Riviera Club team, diving at Woodstock, dancing at Mrs. Gates' School, cheerleading at Shortridge or doing gymnastics at Tumble and Trample of which she was part owner. She continued her interest in physical education at Indiana University where she received her B.S. in education and later at Butler University where she obtained her Masters degree. Many students will remember her fondly as their P.E./Health teacher in the Washington Township Schools where she taught for 25 years. Karen was predeceased by her parents Dr. Clayton and Helen Weigand and by her brother Dr. Philip Weigand. She is survived by her loving husband Waverly Eakins, by her daughter Becky Harding Pritchett (Steve) and their children Ali and Maddie, by her step-daughter Karla Payne (Tim) and their children Jacob, Ian and Connor, and by her sister Ann Weigand (Alan Hedges). Arrangements were entrusted to Flanner and Buchanan – Carmel, 325 East Carmel Drive, Carmel, where visitation will take place Monday, April 13, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Services will be Tuesday, April 14, at 11:00 a.m., also at Flanner and Buchanan. Interment will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Fairview Presbyterian Church, 4609 North Capitol Avenue, Indianapolis, 46208.
