Karen Sue (Phelps) Jones was born on May 1st, 1951 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville Indiana to Norman and Helen Phelps. Karen has two older siblings; Norman Phelps J. and Barbara (Phelps) Rankin. Karen’s family had a humble beginning in post war Evansville. They attended many social events at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 1114 where her father was very active. The VFW became a mainstay for her family during her elementary school years and beyond. She attended Fairlawn Elementary School in Evansville.
Karen’s family moved to Indianapolis for her father’s employment with the VFW. Karen was a life member of the VFW Post 1114 in Evansville. She attended Thomas Carr Howe High School graduating in 1969. In 1970, Karen was married to John Bradley Jones of Portland Indiana. She and John began their life by attending Linwood Christian Church on the Indianapolis East side. Karen and John had two daughters Dawn (Jones) Chisholm born 1974 and Robyn Jones born1980. During these years, Karen enjoyed working in childcare, as a receptionist/office manager for a small computer store and finally working for the national office of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as an administrative assistant.
Throughout her lifetime, Karen remained a vibrant part of the Jones family. She was a fifty-year member of Linwood Christian Church and devout Christian women. She enjoyed quilting, music, playing euchre, jigsaw puzzles and sharing her faith with others. Karen loved the outdoors and went on many camping excursions with her family. One highlight of her life was a trip to Germany and France to visit friends. Karen is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, her two siblings, her two daughters, one grandchild and three step-grandchildren. She loved her family, her church family, and God above all else.
