June Marie Painter of Carmel, Indiana, passed away on July 18, 2026, at the age of 74. She was born in Evanston, Illinois, on June 1, 1952, to parents, Alva “Merl” and Alice (Janczarek) Smith.
June grew up in Chicago and attended Loyola University Chicago, where she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was very proud of her Polish heritage and studied the Polish language as an adult.
June married John Painter on August 31, 1974, together they spent nearly 52 loving years together. Over their marriage, they lived in Troy, Ohio, Sugar Land, Texas, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Lansing, Michigan, before settling in Carmel, Indiana.
June was a fabric and fiber artist and who loved to sew, embroider, and create her own designs. She also loved to travel and enjoyed spending time with her 7 beloved grandchildren.
June is survived by her husband John; children, Brian Painter (Shannon) and Scott Lytle-Painter (Emily); grandchildren, Andrew, Evelyn, Cameron, Clara, Vivian, Bennett, and Hugo; and niece, Christie Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Loren Thomas “Butch” Smith.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in June’s honor may be made to the Alzheimer Association of America.
A visitation will be held from 11am until 1pm on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel (325 E. Carmel Dr. Carmel, IN 46032). A Funeral Service will be held directly following at 1pm. Burial will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
