Cherished mother, wife, sister, and aunt, Judith (Judi) Ann Gibson, passed away on February 12, 2012. She was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on September 3, 1944, to Henry and Roberta White. She moved to Indiana at a young age, and lived in Indianapolis for most of her life.
Judi grew up in Irvington, where her father was the minister at Irvington Methodist Church. In the fifties, Irvington was a neighborhood where everyone was known. When Judi decided she needed a sewing machine to be successful in Home Economics, she simply walked to the Singer Sewing Machine store and picked out one. Judi's talent for sewing became even more evident when every Halloween she designed and made costumes for her children, Jennifer and Jonathan.
Judi walked to Howe High School, from which she graduated in 1962. She graduated from Indiana University in 1966, and started her career as an English teacher. Her love for travel started then, as the first year she taught in St. Louis. She next moved to Boston, and then on to Denver. She taught at Shortridge Middle School where she met her husband Jim, who was also a teacher there. She continued teaching until she left to raise her children. In the nineties she returned to teaching in the adult education program at Indianapolis Public Schools. She taught ESL and prepared adults for GED testing. She then retired in 2009.
Judi was the consummate mother to Jennifer and Jonathan. She spent hours playing with, reading to, and nurturing them. She drove them to lessons, games, and activities for many years. She was always available to them, and was an advocate, encourager and comforter for them. She was Aunt Judi to many, and shared her love for reading and learning with all.
The ocean and books were the other loves of Judi's life. She was always in the middle of a book, with another three or four waiting for her. She loved to take her family on vacation, and took her sister along many times, and later her sister's children. She loved playing in the ocean with her children, and then reading under an umbrella on the beach.
Judi was a kind person, with a great sense of humor and a smile that was special to everyone. She will be missed by all who knew her. She left us too soon.
She is survived by her husband, James D. Gibson, daughter, Jennifer Hynek (Steven), son Jonathan, sister, Jane White, sister-in-law Rosalie Parnell (Larry). She was Aunt Judi to Rob Bunner, Sarah Bunner, Tim Arnold (Alyse), Dave Arnold, Melissa Keeland (Kleat), Ric White, Brian White and Andrea Hausz (Chris). She was great aunt to Chelsea and Madison Keeland and Gavin and Jada Hausz. Judi was preceded in death by her father, Henry White, mother, Roberta White, and brother, Rollin White.
