Judith Atkinson Baker, 72, Fishers, IN, formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away peacefully at home on August 7, 2018. She was born October 29, 1945, in Bronxville, NY, the daughter of the late Harry L. and Margaret Claflin Atkinson.
Judy lived her young life in Barrington, New Jersey, where she and her brother Lee enjoyed summers visiting their grandparents’ home at the Jersey shore. In 1961, her family moved to Indianapolis, where she attended and graduated from Arlington High School in 1963. She then entered Indiana University, where she became a member of Chi Omega sorority. She left IU in 1966 and went to Los Angeles, where she spent two years as a tour guide in Disneyland. She returned to IU in 1968 to complete her bachelor’s degree. She graduated in 1969 and married Sid the same year. In 1975, the family moved to Fort Wayne, where they would spend the next 35 years. In 1982, having studied at the Purdue School of Nursing in Fort Wayne while raising three children, she became a Registered Nurse. For the next twenty-plus years she successfully balanced her nursing career with raising a family. In 2010, she and Sid moved back to Indianapolis to spend retirement near their three adult children and their families.
Her family, her friends, and her patients knew her as kind, caring, and compassionate. During the family’s many summers at Lake George, she loved to host family and friends, especially during the 4th of July holiday. Throughout her life, she was a beautiful light in the lives of everyone who crossed her path. Her family finds comfort in the knowledge that she now is at peace and enjoying eternal life with God in heaven.
Judy is survived by her husband of 49 years, Sidney E. Baker III; her children, Susan Baker Brandenburg, Brian (Tammy) Baker, and Elizabeth “Betsy” Baker; grandchildren Aaron, Logan, Ryan, Ben, Brianna, Ashley, Brooke, Brennan, Kevin, Annabelle, and Teddy; and her brother, Lee Claflin Atkinson of Conifer, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family extends its utmost appreciation to all the medical personnel who have treated and cared for her over the past several years. The family especially thanks the people of St. Vincent Hospice, whose compassionate care made her final days peaceful and comfortable.
For many years, Judy contributed to several organizations. The family asks that you think of her the next time you make a donation to your preferred charity.
