Juanita A. Martin
Born: July 6, 1926 in Scottsville, KY
Died: June 7, 2016 in Cape Coral, FL
Juanita spent most of her life on the Westside of Indianapolis. She graduated from George Washington High School with honors. During WWII, she was instrumental in starting the Women’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (WROTC) at the school with her lifelong friend Juanita Wise.
Juanita married James L. Martin on May 14, 1944 and they were married for 48 years until “death did they part” when Jim died in December of 1992.
Their union produced two sons. Roger was born in 1945 and Ronald was born in 1947.
She was a member of Clermont Christian Church for more than 60 years.
Juanita was a huge lover of children, none so much as her grandchildren: Jonathan and Matthew from son Ronald’s union with Vicki (nee Benson) and Andrea and Jason from Roger’s union with Cheryl (nee Christison). She took great joy in spending time with her grandchildren, and often told stories of all the fun times they had together when they were growing up.
In May 2001, she was blessed with her only great-grandchild Jaelen Elaine Atwell, born to Andrea. She delighted in spending time with Jaelen, having tea parties and walking through the woods and explaining gardening to her.
Juanita was the “other mother” to many boys and girls, men and women, always opening her heart and home to anyone in need of a loving and stable family.
A few of her proud moments include when an article she wrote about a special teacher (Miss Mildred) was published in several newspapers, and when her apple pie won at the annual bake-off.
She was preceded in death by her son Roger in 1981 and her husband Jim in 1992.
She will be missed by many, because she knew that the best vitamin for friendship is B-1. Many will miss her rehearsed and well delivered stories and her sense of humor.
