Joyce E. Weltich

February 7, 1941 — September 23, 2023

Fishers

Joyce was born to parents (now deceased), Murray Dame and Mary Jane Millspaugh on 2-7-41 in Muncie, IN.

Joyce began dating Steve Weltich in the fall of her senior year in high school and they both graduated from Burris High School in Muncie, IN. in 1959. They were married on August 4th, 1962, in the Friends Memorial Church, Muncie, IN. Their personalities complemented each other as they continued to support each other in their individual and joint endeavors.

Joyce graduated from Ball State University, Muncie, IN. with a B.S Degree in Education and later a Master of Arts in Education. Joyce taught elementary art in Anderson, IN. (1964-1966) and middle school art in Indianapolis Public Schools (1966-2000). She was a yearbook sponsor for most of her years with IPS and seemed to have a knack for controlling the young adolescents in the Middle School. Many students would ask if they could feel her blonde/white tipped hair. Joyce and Steve enjoyed boating and eventually purchased a cottage in the Muncie Colony, Tri-Lakes, area of Columbia City, IN. and as soon as Joyce got home on Friday afternoons from teaching school, they headed north to their heated lake cottage for the weekend the year round.

The Dame Family spent many good years visiting her aunt and uncle, Richard and Francis Harold of Gaston, IN. on their farm and their extended family. She enjoyed spending moments with brothers-in-law, Jim Weltich (Patsy) of Farmersburg, IN., and David Weltich (now deceased) and his wife Gloria of Trafalgar, IN.

Joyce always enjoyed a good mystery novel and working diligently on lampworking (bead making) and other craft projects. She would spend untold hours creating birthday cards for her great grandchildren. Joyce also played bridge, both contract & duplicate, before moving to Florida. She just didn’t get carried away with being overly intense over a card game and perhaps it was her Quaker upbringing that allowed her mellowness toward others. Steve, though, eventually refused to play Canasta with her because she beat him so badly.

Joyce is survived by her husband, (Stephen Arthur Weltich) whom she shared nearly 65 years together, and daughter Karen Newton, all of Fisher’s IN., granddaughter Hayley Morgan (husband Mike Morgan), grandson Bradley Newton (wife Maddie Mauk Newton) residing in Nineveh, IN., grandson Max Newton with daughter and son (wife Lori) residing in Westfield, IN., her younger sister Janet Dame Krull (husband Fritz Krull) residing in Leesburg, IN., great grandsons Noah, Cooper, Asher, and Eli of Westfield, IN. and great granddaughter, Charlie Ray Newton residing in Nineveh, IN. Sisters-in-laws Carolyn Dame from Ft. Wayne, IN., and Gloria Weltich of Trafalgar, IN. and nephews Tom and Charles Dame of Ft. Wayne, IN. survived. Joyce was predeceased by her brother David T. Dame and her nephew Mark Dame.
