Joyce Kaye Ellis Hubbard, M.D. Indianapolis, IN Joyce Hubbard, 62, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2014 comforted by family. Joyce was born on October 10, 1951, in Madison, IN and was the daughter of Anna Frances (Little) and Forrest D. Ellis. Her mother, sister Kathy Ellis-Inman, and sister-in-law Judy Rogers preceded her in death. Joyce is survived by her husband, Anthony "Tony" Hubbard, children Jaime, Jason and Jacob Hubbard, and beloved dog Willow, all of Indianapolis. She is also survived by her father (Sue Riddell-Ellis) of Zionsville, IN, her sister, Susan (Dan) Ellis-Miles of Bonita Springs, FL, her brother, Forrest James (Amy) Ellis of McLean, VA, her brothers-in-law Mark Inman of Zionsville, IN, Jack Rogers of Dublin, IN, Jon (Karen) Hubbard of Anderson, SC, and several nieces and nephews, cousins and extended family. Joyce spent her early childhood in Madison and Indianapolis, IN, San Francisco, CA and Homestead, FL. The family settled in North Vernon, IN after her father completed his military service. During that time Joyce developed many lifelong friendships and met her future husband, Tony. After a relationship lasting through high school and college they were married in 1975 and enjoyed over thirty-eight years together as loving husband and wife. She graduated from Jennings County High School in 1969 as the new school's first valedictorian. She went on to attend and graduate from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN (1973) and Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN (1977). Following her medical training and after completing internships and fellowships, she began what culminated in a 30 plus year career caring for children with heart problems. Her professional career began in 1984 as a pediatric cardiologist at Emory University's Egleston Hospital for Children of Atlanta, then in 1987 at Indiana University's Pediatric Cardiology Group at James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. As a member of the Riley team she cared for patients, taught medical students, interns, residents, and fellows. Her specialty was that of the diagnosis and management of abnormal heart rhythms in children. She followed and cared for children with pace makers and related health issues across the state. She was among the early pioneers in that field and authored and co-authored many refereed medical publications related to the subject. She was a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, and Board Citified as a Pediatric Cardiologist. Joyce's passion for her work and the patients she cared for was accompanied by her passion for reading, being outdoors and sailing she shared with her family. Joyce began sailing with her father in the 1960's and went on to share the love of being on the water first with Tony and later with their children. Joyce's recent years were dedicated to spending time with her family and friends on board Integrity, the family restored classic 1961 John Alden designed Challenger class sailing yawl. Joyce often sailed on Lake Erie to various coastal ports with her family and friends and routinely sailed to and visited Kelley's and the Bass Islands. Joyce's love for sailing activities mixed well with her endless work to help young people. She was an avid supporter of youth sailing through volunteer work and memberships of Eagle Creek Sailing Club, and as a Founding Board Member of the Indiana Sailing Foundation and Board Member of the Inter-Lake Lake Yachting Association's Junior Sailing Program. A general calling and visitation will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service from 3:00-4:00p.m. at the Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 N Meridian St. Indianapolis, IN. A Celebration of Life will follow the memorial service from 5:00-8:00p.m. in Zionsville IN. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be made to the Riley Children's Foundation www.rileykids.org or Girl Scouts of Central Indiana www.girlscoutsindiana.org in her name.
