It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joyce Ann Baker, 86, of Zionsville, Indiana. Joyce was born in Bedford, Indiana, on November 18, 1939 to Velvia (Baldwin) Chambers and Edford Chambers from Lawrence County, Indiana and Bedford, Indiana. She graduated from Bedford High School and later moved to Indianapolis where she worked as an accountant / bookkeeper.
In 1966 she met Von David Baker of Indianapolis, formally of Loogootee and Bloomington, Indiana. On June 24th, 1967 they were married at the Bell's Chapel Church of God in Indianapolis and continued to live in Indianapolis for many years. They had three children: Vanessa Ann Baker, who died in infancy, Christopher David Baker, and Gretchen Ann Baker (Loyola). They have four grandchildren: Kennedy Jane Baker, Zoe Elise Baker, Isabel Ann Loyola, and Josefina Ann Loyola; and three step-grandchildren: Loren Baker, Drew Baker, and Tommy Baker. Joyce dearly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, particularly in her later years.
As a young child, Joyce grew up in Bedford, Indiana, the youngest of eight children and had many memories of her early childhood with her three older sisters: Marilyn (Olden), Etta Mae (Peyton), and Rita Gayle (Keller); and her four brothers Frank Chambers, Jack Chambers, Jesse Chambers, and Edford Chambers II, all of which are deceased.
After her children had grown up, Joyce returned to work, first as a volunteer, and then as an employee of the Perry Meridian Middle School as Assistant to the Librarian. She retired from middle school in 2002 and devoted most of her time to being a homemaker, mother, and "Grandma" to her grandchildren that she dearly loved. She enjoyed greatly her trips to visit her daughter's family in Virginia Beach, VA. to see her granddaughters Isabel and Josefina, and her many trips to Zionsville to visit her son's family and their children Kennedy, Zoe, Lauren, Drew, and Tommy and to watch the many Little League softball, volleyball, football, and school plays that the "Baker Kids" participated in over their childhood. Joyce also enjoyed photography and took many memorable pictures of the family and grandchildren over the years. In summer, she also enjoyed gardening and tending to her many flower gardens.
She is survived by her husband, her children and their spouses, and her grandchildren. She was a member, with her husband, of Southport Presbyterian Church (7525 McFarland Blvd., Indianapolis, Indiana, 46237).
Visitation will be held at Flanner Buchanan - Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229) on Monday, December 29, from 7 - 9 pm. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Southport Presbyterian Church (7525 McFarland Boulevard, Indianapolis, Indiana) at 12 pm, noon.
