Joseph Edward Sitzman

McCordsville, Indiana – Joseph Edward Sitzman, 86, passed away on April 20, 2026. A scout master, a strong Catholic, and most importantly, a proud father, his presence will be missed by all who knew him.

Joe was born on October 15, 1939, to parents Joseph R. & Hildreth (Siefert) Sitzman in Indianapolis. He graduated from Cathedral High School, where he played football, wrestled, and threw the shot-put in track and field. Joe started his college journey at Xavier University before graduating from Purdue University with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, he went to work for Methodist Hospital, first as a lab technician, then as the manager of the blood bank, and finished his 41 year career with Methodist Hospital/IU Health in compliance.

Joe’s life was forever changed when his sister set him up on a blind date on August 15, 1959. That night he met Carolyn Moutoux, and they were married on June 8, 1963. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before his passing. Together they raised six children, traveled to Europe, camped in nearly every Indiana State park, and thoroughly enjoyed attending their grandchildren's sporting events.

When not working, Joe was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and camp with his family. He was an Eagle Scout, helped establish the nature center at Camp Belzer, and was the Scout Master for St. Matthew’s Church Boy Scout Troop 443 for many years. He was also an avid gardener and loved all animals, especially his own pets and those of his children.

In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his son, Joseph Michael Sitzman, who passed in 2009.

He is survived by his beloved wife Carolyn; children Elizabeth Ann Burns (Richard), John Robert Sitzman (Amy), James Alan Sitzman (Shirley), Kathleen Marie Koers (Steve), Douglas Edward Sitzman (Julia), and daughter-in-law Julie Sitzman McKenzie; sisters Gail Marie Westhoven and Jane Ellen Clark; 13 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at Holy Spirit Geist (10350 Glaser Way, Fishers Indiana, 46037) from 9:30-11 am. Funeral Mass will begin at 11 am with Father Daily presiding. Burial will take place at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery at 1:30 pm
