Joseph Christian Zur Schmiede, 89, passed away peacefully at home October 3, 2014, never losing his sense of humor and surrounded by family and friends. He was born August 9, 1925, in New Albany, Indiana to Christian Michael and Ida Streicher Zur Schmiede. Joe graduated from New Albany High School, attended Notre Dame University, and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was employed for 43½ years by Indiana Bell Telephone Company/AT&T, retiring in August 1990.
He is survived by Marilyn, his loving wife of 64 years, daughters Ann (Larry) Hilgert of Valdosta, GA and Mary Zur Schmiede of Indianapolis, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Joseph K. Zur Schmiede, four brothers, and two sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Drive East,
Indianapolis Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 11am. Visitation will be Monday, October 6, 2014 from 4:30pm-8:30pm at Flanner and Buchanan- Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Boulevard West Drive, Indianapolis. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Special thanks to Allied Home Care and Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care for their loving kindness.
