John E. Vairo, 85 of Carmel, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2024. John was born in Pocahontas, IL to the late James and Mary Magdalena “Maude” Vairo. He was a veteran of the US Air Force.
John graduated from Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville and received his master’s degree from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Early in his career, as an electrical engineer, John worked on the lunar landing module as part of the Apollo Missions in 1969. Ever the people person, he gravitated to sales, and retired from GTE in 2004.
John was an avid golfer. He played mostly at Stoney Creek Golf Course in Noblesville, where he also worked after retirement. He was a former baseball player and enjoyed woodworking. His grandchildren were a source of great joy.
Family and friends are invited to gather Thursday, April 4 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, where Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am.
John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eileen; children, Joseph Michael (wife, Julie) Vairo, Sharon Marie (husband, Michael) Kleszynski, Thomas Matthew (wife, Angela) Vairo, Susan Christine (husband, Jon) Wright; grandchildren, Matthew and Ryan Kleszynski, Madeline and Eleanor Vairo, Devin (husband, Evan) Bibb, Maxwell Vairo, Katherine Wright; sister, Rose Jordan; and his beloved dog, Lola, ‘Tiger’.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Merciful Help Center, 1045 West 146th Street, Suite A, Carmel, IN 46032.
