John Selvey

John Wesley Selvey, Jr, died early on July 27, 2011 on what would have been his 77th birthday. He died from complications from a heart attack suffered July 26th. John was born and raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma and was the son of John and Frieda Selvey. John was the quintessential student athlete having lettered 7 times and was captain of the tennis team and quarterback of the state runner-up football team in 1952. John passed up several athletic scholarships and accepted the Ford scholarship, attending Oklahoma State University to study engineering. After graduating in 1957 John embarked on a professional journey managing a diverse portfolio of construction projects while working for American Bridge division of US Steel. This included Disneyland‘s Matterhorn, Minute Man Missile bases in the Northern U.S., Daley Civic Center and First National Bank building in Chicago. John worked as Vice President of Baystone Construction in Muncie from 1969 through 1983. John worked for Geupel DeMars Hagerman in Indianapolis for 26 years and was involved with such projects as Circle Center Mall, Circle Monument Statue, Notre Dame Law School and expansion of then Methodist Hospital. John retired in 2009 at the age of 75. John was well respected by all that knew him and was actively involved in the communities in which he lived. He served statewide as an officer for the Association of General Contractors in the early 1980‘s, while living in Muncie he was active in Junior Achievement, Jaycees, and served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church. John was married to Peggy (Davenport) Selvey on June 5, 1954 and spent 57 wonderful years together. John enjoyed his time in retirement traveling extensively with Peggy. John is adored by his family and is survived by his wife Peggy, son Stephen (wife Roza) Muncie, IN and daughter Camille VanderVoort (husband Bret), Mission Hills, KS; and a sister, LeEtta Pitts (husband Don), Oaklawn, IL. John has five grandchildren; Wesley and Jake Selvey, Drew, Lane and Reid VanderVoort. Inurnment and private services will be held. Calling hours at Second Presbyterian Church will be Saturday from 12:30p to 2:00p. The church is located at 7700 North Meridian, Indianapolis, IN.
