John R. Gilmor

John RichardGilmor, 46, died Saturday, April 2, 2016. He was born March 4, 1970 to Richard L. and Sharon K. (Radant) Gilmor inIndianapolis. He graduated from PikeHigh School and attended Montana State University in Bozeman. It was the perfect spot for John as he wasable to hike, bike and ski. Followinghis Montana experience, he spent a year as a certified SCUBA instructorteaching and leading divers in Grand Cayman. In 1995 he enlisted in the Navy at Great Lakes Naval Station and uponcompletion of basic training was awarded the Navy Club of the U. S. MilitaryExcellence Award, the highest award given to a recruit post basictraining. Following basic training hewas stationed in San Diego as a quartermaster (navigation) on a destroyer andcompleted two tours in the Persian Gulf during the Gulf Wars.

John grew up close to Eagle Creek Reservoirwhere he learned to sail with his 16’ Hobie Cat which led to a life-long loveof sailing. He and his wife were activemembers of the Eagle Creek Sailing Club. His other favorite pastime was golf.

John marriedhis life’s love, Joy Ann Wimberg, July 23, 2002 on the beach in GrandCayman. They were a great team andtogether owned and operated the Boathouse Grill on W. 56th St.,Indianapolis, where their many friends were known to gather.

Besides hiswife and parents, John is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Katie andJim Naughton, and their sons Jimmy and Will. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Rose Wimberg andsisters-in-law and their husbands, Jane and Adam Adkinson and Holly and MattHappe and their children Isaac and Adelaide Adkinson and Hope, Hunter and HalleHappe, in addition to many other relatives and friends who loved him. He was a kind, fun-loving great son, husband,brother, and friend – a bright light at any gathering. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Calling will be Friday, April 8, from 4 to 8 PM,at Flanner and Buchanan, Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd. W. Dr.,Indianapolis with a memorial service Saturday, April 9 at 11 AM, at St. Luke’sUMC, 100 W. 86th St., Indianapolis with Rev. Rob Fuquay officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made tothe National League of POW/MIA Families, 5673 Columbia Pike, Suite 100, FallsChurch, VA 22041.
