John R. Condon

JOHN RICHARD CONDON, II John R Condon, 60, Greencastle, Lt Col US Air Force (retired) died, Monday, July 21, 2014. John was born December 25, 1953 in Indianapolis, IN, oldest son of ten children born to John R and Rose Ellen (Lowe) Condon, both deceased. In 1972 he married Ronda L Christy, she survives. He was a 1971 graduate of Cardinal Ritter HS, holds a BS in Social Sciences and a BS in Criminal Justice, Troy University, 1979 and MA in Public Administration, Webster University, 1982. In January 1972 he joined the US Air Force and enjoyed a challenging and distinguished 28-year career, retiring in 2000. During his career he held many positions including Commander of the USAF Weapons School, Squadron Commander, Staff Officer-Inspector General at Langley AFB, and Ops Officer¸ RAF Alconbury, England. He earned many awards and medals including AF Achievement Metal, AF Commendation Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal to name a few. He served three deployments to Kuwait for Desert Watch, and later served in Saudia Arabia for Desert Storm. Basically John was a fighter pilot --- who loved every minute he flew the A10 "warthog!" After retiring from the Air Force he joined the team of pilots at FedEx, retiring in 2012. He had many interests and hobbies including photography, wood-working and was an avid, lifelong race fan, seldom missed the Indy 500. John was very patriotic, loved his country, lived to the fullest and treasured his family and friends. John is survived by his wife, Ronda, and two sons, John R III (Angie), Greencastle, and Daniel (Katherine) Reno, NV; five grandchildren, Evan, Josiah, Luke, Delia and Lucky; sisters Fran Simmerman (Rick), Danville; Lois Gallagher-Ball (Gary), Rockville; Beth Haver, Plainfield; brothers Ray, Mike (Sharri) & Sean, Danville; Bob, Plainfield; Mark, Indianapolis and Philip (Heather) Sparks, NV; and numerous nieces, nephews and aunts and cousins. Calling will be on Friday, July 25, 2014 from 11AM-2PM with service at 2:00 P.M. and burial at Floral Park Cemetery to follow. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Wounded Warriors fund.
