John Nicholas Pasyanos

September 26, 1935 — October 27, 2022

Zionsville, Indiana

John Nicholas Pasyanos entered into eternal peace with our Lord on October 27, 2022. John was born in the village of Plagia, Mytilene, Lesbos, Greece on September 26, 1935, to Nicholas Panayiotis and Persephone Vouros Pasyanos. Since his father was a WWI disabled veteran and an American citizen, John and family were the first to leave Greece and arrive in New York on September 30, 1946, on the troop ship Marine Carp.

They settled in Newport, RI, where he graduated from Rogers High School. From the time he came to America until the time he went to college, he worked at the RI Lunch and the Broadway Lunch peeling hundreds of onions and potatoes. In high school, he played football and enjoyed boxing. In the summer of 1955, he worked at General Electric.

He graduated from Boston’s Wentworth Institute with an Architectural Engineering and Construction degree. He served in the United States Marine Corp Reserve. He worked for Gilbain Construction in Providence, RI, on the first automated post office. As a resident engineer, he moved to Marion, Indiana to build a plant for St. Regis Paper Company. There he met his future wife Liberty Chochos to whom he was married for 60 years. After spending twenty-five years in the real estate and beverage business, John moved his family to Indianapolis. He enjoyed taking his family to Newport, RI, New York, and Pennsylvania to visit relatives and Florida for many vacations. John enjoyed their second home in Sarasota and especially his many trips to his homeland. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral and served for many years as Stewardship Chairman and assistant treasurer. He served on the Board of Opportunity Industries, Jaycees and on several HOA Boards. He was also a long-time member of AHEPA and served in many official capacities and on many committees.

John was an avid gardener and for many years grew basil for the Elevation of the Cross. He was also an excellent and creative cook and baker. He loved gathering together with family and friends and truly loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren to whom he told wonderful stories about his life in Lesvos.  He is survived by his wife, Liberty; his children, Persephone, Demetra, Panayiotis (Amanda); eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; his brother, Duke, Newport, RI; his sister, Penny, Athens, Greece. John is preceded in death by his oldest son Nicholas; his parents, Nicholas and Persephone; his brothers, Peter and Emmanuel. The family is very grateful for the doctors, nurses and health care workers who lovingly cared for our beloved the last 3 months at the Heart Hospital and St Vincents at Carmel and 86th Street.  We pray his memory be eternal.

Visitation will be held on November 3rd, 2022, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral from 4 pm – 8 pm with Trisagion Prayer at 7 pm.
