John B. “Jack” Legener, 96 of Carmel, passed away Friday, December 19, 2025. Jack was born March 27, 1929 in Green Bay, WI to the late John L. and Anna Bertrand Legener. He was a 1951graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a BS in Finance. From 1952-1955 Jack served in the US Army-Finance Corp during the Korean War.
Jack was employed by American States Insurance Company in sales and management for over 30 years, working in Springfield, Wheaton, Seattle and Indianapolis. He retired as president of American States Reinsurance Company in 1992.
Jack was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, Carmel, where he volunteered as a greeter. He was a member of Woodland Country Club, the Plantation Club of Venice, FL, and the Broad Ripple Sertoma Club He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge. He was also a volunteer in the emergency room at St. Vincent Hospital, Carmel.
Jack was an avid Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers fan. He was a golfer, stamp collector, ham radio operator and contract bridge player. Jack was an Eagle scout and enjoyed the outdoors. He was an archery competitor and swimming instructor in his youth.
A memorial funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 2, at 10:30am in the chapel at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, with visitation one hour prior to the Mass.
Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Maxine. He is survived by his wife, Ann; children, Joseph (wife, Virginia) Legener and Mary (husband, Wyatt) Legener; stepchildren, Michelle (husband, John) Jacobs, Michael (wife, Jeanette) Method, Mary (husband, James) Evans, Margot (husband, Kurt) Miley, Melinda (husband, Mike) Nash and Monica (husband, Michael) Cronin; 23 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church.
