John Lawson

May 6, 1926 — April 3, 2014

John Wesley Lawson (May 5, 1926 – April 3, 2014) Dear Dad We can only imagine the joy with which Moremom and pappy welcomed you to earth. You must have been surrounded by a lot of love. I know that is how you left this earth. You were surrounded by a loving wife, a daughter, and two adoring grandsons. You gave us your heart and even though you are no longer here on earth, I know the angels swept you away to a place of light and love. John Wesley grew up in Memphis Tennesse with his parents, Mable and George Lawson. Brothers George (Bubba) Lawson, and Lauder Lawson, preceded John in death. John is survived by his brother Davis Lawson, daughter Jeanne Sporre, and his grandsons Michael and John Sporre. The most important partner in John's life was his wife of 59 years, Ilona Lawson. She took him by the hand in later life and kept him strong as long as his body would last. John Lawson attended Memphis State University in 1957 with a BA in Business Administration. In 1962, he graduated with a law degree from Indiana University. John practiced in the state of Indiana asa criminal lawyer for 40 years. He was a member of the ABA and Phi Delta Phi. A Major in the Army, John served in Japan and Germany. He proudly served his country for 12 years. There was no greater honor for John. John's hobbies included reading, hunting, gun collecting, and daily trips to Trader Joe's. The best hobby he had most of his life was just hanging with his grandsons. The little things like walks on the Monon and teaching them how to make arrows made John's heart complete. The boys were his greatest joy and accomplishment. Those who knew John knew he was an honest and a true friend. Those of you who made him part of your family, thank you. Your acts of kindness meant a great deal to us all. Graveside service will be held at 11am Tuesday, April 8, 2014 Flanner and Bucahanan- Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with burial in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
