John “Jack” Heitler, 78, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully on March 12, 2011 after a short illness.
He was born October 15, 1932 in Chicago, IL to Charles and Ruth Heitler. He was the youngest of two children, his late older brother being Chas. He married his late wife and college sweetheart, JoAnn on Sept. 1, 1957 and they enjoyed 50 years together.
John graduated from Shortridge High School in 1950, attended and graduated with an undergraduate degree in History from University of Texas, then entering law school and graduating with his law degree in 1957. He was in private practice in Tyler, TX until 1966 when he started working for the State of Indiana. From 1970 until retirement, he was in the General Counsel Office for the Veterans Administration. During his career and especially after retirement, he enjoyed golfing and bowling on a continual basis with many good friends. Their friendship was greatly appreciated by John and his family. He especially enjoyed winning the handsome “pots” sometimes topping one dollar (in quarters).
John is survived by two sons, John and Charles and daughter, Carol; and their spouses Lynn and Ann; his grandchildren and step grandchildren, Chris, Heather, Jon, Alex, Emily, Ole, Paul, Curtis, Alison, Ryan and Shane; and two great grandchildren, Gavin and Hunter.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 15 at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center Washington Park North Mortuary and Cemetery from 3:00PM to 7:00PM. A private graveside service will be held on Wed, March. 16 at Washington Park North Cemetery.
