John Isaac Zink

February 20, 1920 — April 25, 2014

John Isaac Zink, 94 of Indianapolis went to his eternal home with The Lord on April 25, 2014. He was born in Pekin, Indiana on February 20, 1920 to Alonzo and Mary Spaulding Zink. After graduating from Pekin High School, he moved to Indianapolis and began working at Allison Engine Division of General Motors. On May 19, 1942 he joined the US Army and mainly served in the European Theater during WWII. While in the Army, he was an Artillery Mechanic. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and earned the Bronze Star and also was involved in the liberation of the Nordhausen Concentration Camp. On February 15, 1946, he married the love of his life, Ethel Pauline Greeson Zink, who preceded him in death on February 8th of this year. She was laid to rest on their 68th wedding anniversary. After his military service, he continued working at Allison Engine Division of General Motors. He retired there after 42 years of service. He was a member of Englewood Christian Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the UAW. He also participated in the Veterans History Project. He loved fishing, woodworking and trying to grow the perfect tomato. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents, two sisters, six brothers and a grandson. Surviving to cherish his memory are his daughter, Cheryl Zink, granddaughter, Rachel (Scott) Engle and great-grandchildren, John David Engle, Stella Grace Engle and Eleanor Jane Engle.
