John H Dunn

John H. Dunn, 90, a long-time resident of Speedway, IN peacefully passed to the Lord Saturday, August 2, 2014.. His beloved wife of 63 years, Billie Dawn (Montgomery) Dunn was at his side. John was born, October 15, 1923 in Crawfordsville, IN as the only child to Lawrence Heber Dunn and Florence Madeline (Layne) Dunn. A good athlete, John played basketball and baseball for Crawfordsville High School and St. Joseph's High School Academy. After graduating from high school, John attended St. Joseph's College and the University of Notre Dame before volunteering to serve his country in World War II. John served honorably in the United States Navy as a Commissioned Officer and participated in the beach-landing invasion of Iwo Jima. Upon completion of his military service, John returned home and finished his education, graduating from Indiana University. John then went to work for the Allison Transmission Division of General Motors in Speedway, IN. It was at Allison where he met his future bride, Billie Dawn Montgomery. John and Billie were married on February 9, 1952. John worked for Allison Transmission in data processing and material control for 32 years, retiring in 1983. John's faith in Jesus Christ allowed him to live a life centered around his role as leader of his family. John and Billie have 8 children, 28 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A devoted son, a loving husband and a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather, John and Billie spent thousands of hours cheering and supporting the activities of their children and their families. In 2013, John's son-in-law, Dr. Bruce C. Fields, predeceased him. John is survived by his wife, Billie; his 4 sons, Michael (Conni), John (Kathy), Tom (Dana), Joe (Molly); his 4 daughters, Barbara Fields, Ann (Jim) Talhelm, Mary (Dr. Luke) Wagner, Carolyn (Dr. Kurt) Fromme; as well as 28 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 11th from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at Flanner and Buchanan - Speedway. As a charter member, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church at 9:30am on Tuesday, August 12th. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to either St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 6000 W. 34th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46224 or to St. Vincent Hospice, 8450 North Payne Road, Suite 100, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46268.
