John Edward Smith, age 78, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on May 3, 2026. Born on November 9, 1947, to Fredrick Roy Smith Jr. and Josephine Smith, he grew up in the Butler‑Tarkington neighborhood and attended Shortridge High School, where he formed many of the friendships and passions that shaped his life.
In August 1967, John was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably in Vietnam until his discharge in March 1969. His service remained a meaningful part of his identity, and he carried the discipline, resilience, and perspective from those years throughout his life.
In September 1969, John married Alease Brown, who later gave birth to his only child, Kristen. Although their marriage ended in 1972, they remained close friends. In 1993, he married Angela Howell, with whom he shared several years of marriage before deciding to part ways as friends.
Early in his career, John worked as a postman for the United States Postal Service. He later found his calling in the culinary world, serving as a chef at Butler University, the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, IU Hospital, and several other establishments. His dedication, skill, and pride in his work left a lasting impression on colleagues and those he served.
John was loved by all who knew him. He had a vibrant spirit and a deep love for music—singing and performing in several groups that traveled throughout Indiana and neighboring states. Whether on stage or among family, his voice and presence brought joy to every room. He also loved to dance, share meals, and spend time with the people he cherished most.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Laswell (prior married name: Smith); his father, Fredrick Roy Smith Jr.; his brothers, Fredrick Roy Smith III and Reggie Smith; and his sister, Samara Smith. His Their memories of loved ones remained close to his heart throughout his life. He is survived by his daughter, Kristen Kimberlee Hood (maiden name Smith); his grandson, Joshua Elijah Hayes; his nephew, Reggie Harris Smith; and many great‑nieces and great‑nephews.
John’s legacy lives on in the laughter he sparked, the meals he crafted, the songs he sang, and the countless moments of warmth he shared with family and friends.
