John Dock

November 3, 1929 — August 7, 2012

John William Dock, 82, former director of the State University of Buffalo Alumni Association, died of Congestive Heart Failure August 7, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born in Detroit, Michigan and educated in its public schools, he graduated in 1952 from Michigan State University with a degree in Journalism. While at MSU, Dock was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. Following service in the U.S. Army (discharged with the rank of first lieutenant), he began a career in public relations starting with Consumers Power Company in Jackson, Michigan; the Michigan Trucking Association in Lansing and Michigan State University as editor of the alumni magazine. He was active in several civic and professional organizations in Michigan. Dock came to Buffalo in 1970 as alumni editor at the University of Buffalo. He was a member of the MSU Alumni of Western New York, the Sigma Delta Chi Society of Professional Journalists, the Blue and White Club, the Town of Amherst Republican Party Committee and Tan Tara Golf Club. He was also an elder of North Presbyterian Church in Williamsville, NY. In retirement, he and his wife Marilyn (Taylor) of 58 years, enjoyed traveling, especially to visit their children in Michigan and Indiana. They spent winters at their Vero Beach, Florida condominium. In addition to golf and travel, Dock became involved in painting (oils and acrylics). He avidly followed the fortunes of college and professional teams, especially University of Buffalo, Michigan State and the Detroit Tigers. Survivors include his son William Dock (Shauna) of East Lansing, Michigan, daughter Diane Karski (William) and two grandchildren, Brian and Megan, of Indianapolis, Indiana. Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marilyn. A memorial service will be held at North Presbyterian Church in Williamsville, NY on Saturday, September 8th at 10:30am.
