John Gilbert Lee Deane

Indianapolis, Indiana – John Gilbert Lee Deane passed away on December 1, 2023. John was born to Logan and Emma Lucille (Woods) Deane in Noblesville, Indiana, on August 16, 1945. He was 78 years old.

John joined the military out of high school, earning his GED where he was military police. He was honorably discharged in 1977 after 10 years of active service. He served as a Marion Co Deputy Sheriff before moving to Miami in 1984 joining G4S Security Firm working in the court system and public transit. He was a member of the American Legion, Post #252, Greenwood, IN.

John met the final love of his life, Linnette Maud Morgan in Miami in 1990, where they were married on December 18, 1991. They remained devoted until her passing on October 29, 2010. In their 20 years together, they enjoyed spending time with her children whom they are both survived by, Arlene Reid, Peta-Gay Thompson, and Giovanni Sinclair, and many grandchildren. 

Outside of work John was known for his kindness, his large presence, and his gregarious nature. John loved to talk about anything and everything. He didn’t know a stranger and always made everyone feel welcomed and a friend. He loved fishing, singing, John Wayne and spaghetti westerns, writing poetry, and creating beadwork jewelry.

More than anything else, John loved his family. He was everyone’s friend, brother, honorary dad and papaw/grandpa to many. He will be sorely missed.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linnette (Maud) Deane, two infant brothers, infant nephew James Miller, and infant niece Kathy Jo Miller.

He is survived by his children, John Deane (Candace) Dawn Coons (Kevin), Arlene Reid, Peta-Gay Thompson, and Giovanni Sinclair, sisters Nellie Martin, Eva Browning, Dora Miller (James), Marie Irvin, brothers Tommy Deane (Beverly), Robert Deane (Cathy), Claude Deane (Donna), grandchildren Courtney Vasquez, Brandon Deane, Charles Shirell, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, and honorary family. 

Visitation will take place on December 11, 2023, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Flanner Buchanan - Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46229) with funeral services to follow at 12:00 pm. A family meal will be held at the American Legion post 252 (334 US Highway 31 South, Greenwood, Indiana 46142) following the services.
