John David Wolfgang

June 11, 1939 — April 4, 2023

Carmel, IN

John David Wolfgang was born on June 11, 1939 in the small town of Carmel, Indiana, the youngest of five children born to Norris Wolfgang and Cloffa Randall Wolfgang.  He died on April 4, 2023 at the Compassus Hospice Hospital in Indianapolis. He was an alumnus of Carmel High School. He served as a Marion County Deputy Sheriff. He graduated from Barber School in 1957 and was a local barber, cutting hair in the Nora area for 63 years, owning and operating the Nora Plaza Barber Shop.

John was married to Donna Charlesette Lewis on June 29, 1974 at the Epworth Methodist Church in Indianapolis, receiving and cherishing her three children, the three Thompson kids – Jack, Christy, and Mike as his own. John was a civic minded American patriot who served his community in multiple ways over many decades.  He was a Mason, President of the White River Little League, contributed to numerous charitable causes, sponsored various kids’ leagues, and since 2005, a member of the Carmel Fire Department Merit Board.  He enjoyed sports of all kinds including bowling, expressed his views clearly but carefully on political issues, enjoyed trips to Myrtle Beach with Donna, and “loved QVC”. He was a member of Faith Missionary Church, winsomely shared his faith in Jesus Christ. For many years, he cut out the cars for the annual Pinewood Derby, and was active for decades as an Usher and Head Usher up to his last illness.

Preceding John in death were his beloved wife of almost 40 years, Donna; his parents; a brother, Paul Wolfgang; two sisters, Mildred Bender and Barbara Van Arsdall; and a son, Jack Thompson.

John is survived by his sister, Julia Butler; daughter, Christy Thompson; son Mike (Michelle) Thompson; granddaughter, Nikki (Tyler) Wolfe; grandson, Warren (Ashley) Cornelius; great grandchildren, Aiden, Riley, and Kenna Wolfe; and Will, Carter, Ellie, and Rosie Cornelius; as well as many nieces, nephews, and innumerable friends.
