John Wallace Butterworth Sr. of Speedway passed away May 16, 2024. He was the son of The Late William and Lillian Butterworth. He was preceded in death by his sons John Jr. and James Harter, his twin sister Camilla Goerg, and his brothers, Charles (Helen Jo), William (Margaret), and Gene (Penney).
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 66 years, Jo Anna and his daughters, Deanna Aguilar, and Nancy Butterworth.
John was a beloved teacher and successful coach at Speedway Junior High School. An award called “Butterworth Award” is given annually to a male and female athlete who has participated in 3+ junior high sports and achieved high academic GPA. The award is voted on by the teachers and coaches. The plaque with the recipient’s name is proudly displayed in the Junior High office. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ball State University. He spent 4 ½ years in the security branch of the United States Air Force and was stationed in North Africa, Crete, and Northern Michigan. He was a member of the Speedway Lions Club and was a recipient of the W. R. Worth Fellow Award, as well as the Melvin Jones Fellow award for dedicated Humanitarian Service.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, his daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.
Services are planned for Wednesday May 22 with calling at Saint Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church from 9:00 -10:00 am, followed by a funeral mass to at 10:00 am. Burial will be in Lincoln Memory Garden, Whitestown, Indiana.Wednesday, May 22, 2024
