John H. Burgess, 81, of Fairland, IN passed away on November 9, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by family.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ella Burgess; siblings: Chuck and James Burgess. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sylvia A. (Bushfield) Burgess; children: Andra B. Chamberlain (Eric) and John H. Burgess, Jr. (Brandy); grandchildren: Logan and Jeremiah Chamberlain, Nicole, Brooke, Allison, and Luke Burgess; great-grandchildren: Layne Chamberlain, Aurora, and Mia Julbert; siblings: Mary Whitlock, Judi McGaugh, Frank, and Rocky Burgess; and many other extended family members and beloved friends.
John was born in Terre Haute, IN on December 22, 1943, to the late, Henry M. and Ella A. (Thompson) Burgess. Right after graduating high school in 1962, he joined the US Marine Corp as a welder and served his country honorably for 4 years as a Corporal.
John was a family man. He was very involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He took pride in being their biggest fan. He was very successful in coon hunting and has one of his dogs in the Hall of Fame. John also had a great love for Peruvian horses and raised and bred champions. In 1983 John founded Burgess Mechanical Corp. The company’s longevity and great successes are a testament to his willpower and determination.
Visitation will be from 11am until 1pm, Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Christ Indianapolis United Methodist Church (8540 US 31 S, Indianapolis, IN 46227), where funeral services will immediately follow at 1pm. Burial will be in Washington Park East Cemetery.
