John grew up in the small town of Ravenswood on Indy's Northside in Washington Township. In the 1950s Ravenswood was the home to the Washington Twps. Fire department, and as a young man would ‘chase’ the truck as a volunteer. In 1957 at 21 years of age, he became a paid Firefighter that would go on to include a career of 50 years of public service, including the longest tenured Fire fighter in Indianapolis at the time of his retirement. He worked in many roles including as Chief in the 1970’s.

His second career was as a certified electrician, which was for over 60 years as well.

Along the way he was also a special deputy for the Marion County Sherrif's dept which included a stint as the Mashall of the town he grew up in, Ravenswood. In his long time as public servant, John lived long enough to watch his hometown absorbed by the city of Indianapolis and Washington Twp Fire Dept becoming a part of IFD.

He has been a proud member of the IFFA, IAAI.

He read the Indianapolis Star and News from front to back every day, which included solving every puzzle they had to offer. He became a Purdue Boilermaker basketball fan later in life and having all the generations come over to his swimming pool, during the hot days of summer is how he enjoyed his later years of retirement.

Much Love from all John!!
