Joann Draughon

Joann Kinzie Draughon, 93 of Indianapolis, passed away October  7th 2021. She was born January 18, 1928, in Peru, Indiana to parents Ralph and Lelah (Wackerly) Kinzie.

 

Joann grew up in Muncie, Indiana, where she graduated from high school in 1945 from Muncie Central. She continued her education at Franklin College and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. It was at Franklin where she met Joe Draughon arriving on campus after serving in WWII. They married after graduation and made their home in Indianapolis, Indiana.

 

Joann would later become a 4th grade teacher for Indianapolis Public Schools, and received a masters degree at Butler University. She also became a librarian for IPS retiring in 1989.

 

Joann was a vibrant, independent lady. When her children were young, she and Joe loved to take family trips to national parks and historical sites.  Her love of travel took her all over the world. In her later years Joann enjoyed spending the winter months in Sarasota, Florida. She was an avid reader, and frequently visited her local public library. 

 

She is survived by her children Kathy (Larry) Hazlett and Steve (Carolyn) Draughon; grandchildren Elizabeth Cercone, Justin Hazlett, and Laura Hazlett; and great grandchildren Jackson, and Savanah Cercone.

 

Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Joe Draughon, and by her sister and brother-in-law Eleanor and Pete Pasotti.
