Joan Y Cleveland

Joan Y. Cleveland (84) of Indianapolis, Indiana went to be with the Lord on 12/12/2020 at 12:45 AM at her near west-side home. Born July 05, 1936 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Arthur and Ruby (Hershberger) Ryan. Joan graduated from Ben Davis High School in 1954. She then attended Butler University to obtain a bachelor’s degree in education and later a Master’s in education. On December 21, 1957, she married 2nd Lt Arthur Cleveland, USAF. During her husband’s four-year commissioned time in the Air Force their two sons, Kevin and John, were born. After returning from the USAF, Joan returned to her high school alma mater, Ben Davis High School, where she taught for 30+ years. She retired in 1996 and became more involved with travel and her grandchildren. She continued to help young people with their English and writing skills; in fact, her son a retired USAF officer said, “I never wrote a paper (hundreds) that mom did not edit.” She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survivors include her sons, Kevin (Diane) and John Cleveland; seven grandchildren: Kirsten, Joshua (Kassie), Brianna (Andy Owens), Blake (Paige), Carisa, Nicayla, and Aaleyah; and seven greatgrandchildren. Due to CoViD restrictions, the grave-side burial service will be family only, but a celebration of life is tentatively planned for July 05, 2021 with the time and location to be announced.
