Joan Therese Blessington Wischmeyer, 83, of Carmel, passed away on September 24, 2022, at Community North Hospital surrounded by family. Joan was born December 6, 1938 in Charles City, Iowa, to John Leonard and Viola Frahm Blessington. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Charles City in 1956. She received a B.A. degree from University of Northern Iowa. Joan taught 3rd grade in Waverly, Iowa and the city of St. Francis, Wisconsin before her marriage to Stephen J. Wischmeyer on December 29. 1962. After moving from Shelby Township Michigan to Carmel, Joan was a claims processor, auditor and treasurer for Equitable Life Assurance. Her primary job was being Mom to Lynn, Todd, and Michael.
She was an active volunteer for 20 years, serving with the probation office for Marion County Superior Courts for which she won the Jefferson Award in 1999. She was also a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, a friend of the Carmel Clay Public Library, and a volunteer for Carmel Clay Historical Society. She was also an active member of TOPS and Questers. Joan loved entertaining, playing bridge and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Stephen, of 59 years, sister, Judy Blessington, daughter, Lynn Bruckman, sons, Todd Wischmeyer (Lee Ann) and Michael Wischmeyer (Mary Ellen), grandsons, Bradley Bruckman and Jacob Wischmeyer (Hannah), granddaughters Stephanie Castro (Mike), Katelyn Wischmeyer, Carly Wischmeyer, and great grandsons, Rylan and Mason Castro and Jace Bruckman.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on Friday, September 30, 2022, at 10:30 am, preceded by visitation at 9:00 am in the church commons.
