Joan Muriel Chance Osterhous
Joan Osterhous passed away June 16. She was born February 23, 1934 in Indianapolis, grew up on the west side and graduated from George Washington High School in 1952. She married Robert Osterhous August 1, 1964, and they were married for nearly 48 years at the time of her death.
Joan always loved horses. She had her own horse, Buck, when she was growing up. Joan and Bob enjoyed many vacations at a guest ranch in Woodland Park, Colorado, where their favorite activity was early morning rides in the mountains with breakfast over the campfire.
She and Bob were members of the Lincoln Continental Owners Club and the Old Car Social Club, where they enjoyed dinners, social events and trips to car museums. She also attended HAM radio club social events with Bob.
Joan worked for 19 years at John Hancock Insurance Company and later served as the secretary/treasurer for Bob's two businesses, Welding Equipment and Supply Company and Industrial Air Equipment.
Most of all, she will be remembered as a constant, steady presence for her extended family. She always had a smile for you, remembered every occasion with cards and presents, and hosted "race day" cookouts and Thanksgiving dinners for many years. Most of her family can't remember a Thanksgiving when Joan didn't cook the turkey – whether the dinner was at her home or someone else's.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; her brother, Richard Chance; nieces and nephew Marilyn Shank, Tom Chance and Barbara Chance; one great niece; five great nephews; and two great-great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Della (Kochel) Chance.
We are grateful she was healthy, happy and active until she had a stroke one week before her passing.
Calling and services will be Wednesday, June 20, at Flanner and Buchanan – Broad Ripple, 1305 East Broad Ripple Avenue. Calling will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with services at 11 a.m. Burial will follow that afternoon at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
