Joan Lyons

December 30, 1899 — May 23, 2015

Joan Praed Lyons of Zionsville, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 23, 2015. Joan was born in Indianapolis to the late John G. and Flora Praed. She was Salutatorian of her graduating class at Speedway High School. Joan was a writer; she had five published books, four dealing with Zionsville history. She wrote for the Zionsville Times Sentinel for over 30 years. While there she wrote a column called Past Times. Joan was a member of the Zionsville Women's Club, a Friend of the Zionsville Library, was Past Director of the Museum Guild and was a member of the Zionsville Historical Society where she was honored with a proclamation. She received a First Place award by the National Newspaper Association for a feature article and several feature writing awards from the State of Indiana. She also received the Town Crier Award and the Dahlia Award from the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Friday, May 29 at Flanner and Buchanan-Zionsville, where family and friends are invited to gather from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 28. Joan is survived by her husband of over 64 years, Steve; children, Dr. Thomas Scott (wife, Debra Dubow) Lyons, Kathleen Lucinda (husband, David) Portell, Dr. John Stephen (wife Dr. Lise Bisnaire) Lyons and Matthew Charles (fiancée, Sarah Lowry) Lyons; grandchildren, Trevor Lyons, Caitlin Lyons and Dylan Lyons; sisters, Verna Slyder and Mary Ellis. Memorial contributions may be made to the Speedway Christian Church, Zionsville Christian Church, The Hussey-Mayfield Library or the SullivanMunce Cultural Center.
