Joan E. (Hockersmith) Piercefield

83, of Lakeland, Florida, passed away on September 27, 2015. Mrs. Piercefield was born on December 14, 1931 in Indianapolis, IN, to Leonard and Gladys Hockersmith. Mrs. Piercefield attended Indianapolis grade schools and was a 1949 graduate of Howe High School. She also graduated from DePauw University in 1953. She was employed by the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence County for 32 years, after teaching at the Junior High School in Columbus, IN and in the Indianapolis school system, beginning her career in 1954. She totaled 38 years of teaching and counseling. She was a long time member of St. Marks Lutheran Church in Indianapolis.

In 1957 she married Julian G. Piercefield of Columbus, IN, who survives. They were married 58 years. Mr. and Mrs. Piercefield's only son, David, preceded them in death on July 14, 2007. In addition to her husband, she is survived by 3 grandchildren, Stephen, Jacquelyn and Lauren; Deborah Weaver, David's first wife and Becky Strickland, David's widow; and two step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
