Miss Jo Ann Hartley, 88 of Indianapolis passed on April 24, 2026. She was born on May 8, 1937, in Beech Grove, IN to her parents, the late Virgil and Gladys (Mitchell) Hartley. She also preceded by an infant brother, John warren Hartley.

Jo Ann attended Southport High School for 2 years and graduated from Howe High School. She went on in her studies to graduate from Concordia Teachers College in 1967 and received her master’s degree in English and Spanish from IU. Jo Ann’s first teaching job was for four years at Lutheran High North in Chicago. After 4 years away from her parents, she felt it was time to move back to Indianapolis and live with her parents, which she did until their deaths.

While back in Indianapolis, Jo Ann taught at Wood High School, Manuel Evening School, Roncalli High School and Tech Day Adult School, retiring in 1999.

She has been an active member of St John Lutheran Church since 1977, serving as former President of Ladies Aid as well as program planner for that group for many years.

Jo Ann’s favorite annual event was Honoring Veterans of the armed services. She also volunteered at a local food pantry, hospital gift shop and a Senior Living gift shop.

She made friends wherever she went and everyone who knew her loved her. Jo Ann was a devout Christian and exemplary person in every way.

Jo Ann will be sadly missed by her 10 first cousins, her second cousins and their families as well as her many devoted friends that he made along her life’s journey.

Funeral Services for Jo Ann will be held Friday May 8, 2026, at 11am at St. John Lutheran Church, 6630 Southeastern Ave., Indianapolis, IN, with visitation one hour prior at church. Funeral services entrusted to Fanner Buchanan Funeral Center, Washington Park East.
