Obituary

Jim Smith, 76, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on August 12, 2026 in Franklin, Tennessee. He was the only son of James Edward Smith and Ola Mae Wood.

Jim grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he attended Emmerich Manual High School. After graduating in 1968, he attended trade school where he developed the computer skills that would allow him to build his professional career that began at Schwitzer in Indianapolis. Jim was also very proud to have served dutifully and honorably in the Indiana Army National Guard from 1970 to 1976.

On April 17, 1971, Jim married the love of his life, Georgianna “Ann” Rolfsen, and two years later, they began their family. Jim’s career took them from Indianapolis to Tampa, FL (1983), Chattanooga, TN (1983-1993), and Memphis, TN (1993-2017).

After retiring from Federal Express in 2012, Jim and Ann enjoyed traveling together. Their adventures took them to Hawaii, the Caribbean, and many places in between. As Disney Vacation Club members, they especially enjoyed sharing their love of Disney World with their family, generously treating their children and grandchildren to frequent trips and creating many cherished memories together.

In 2017, Jim and Ann moved to Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, where they enjoyed making new friends and becoming part of their Del Webb community.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Ann; his parents; and his sister, Karen Lovell.

He is survived by his children, Amy Toole (Lee) of Tupelo, Mississippi, and Christopher Smith (Angie) of Spring Hill, Tennessee; his grandchildren, Madeleine Toole, Robert “Trip” Toole, MaryGrace Toole, Erika Green (Doug), Megan Smith, and Samuel Smith; his sisters, Peggy Weishaar, Linda Graham (Charles), Jacqueline Ward, and Kathleen Cowan, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Jim will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 89 N. 17th Ave., Beech Grove, IN 46107. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:00 p.m. A committal service will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
