Jimmie J. Ray

Jimmie J. Ray, 85, of Indianapolis, passed away on Friday September 17, 2021. He was born on August 30, 1936 in Decatur, Illinois. Jimmie graduated from Warren Central High School in 1954, and served as editor of their Wigwam yearbook. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1958 where he was the editor of the campus newspaper, and a Master’s degree from Butler University in 1964. Jimmie did his post graduate studies at Ball State University, Indiana University, and Syracuse University.

Jimmie spent many years in education, including Ben Davis High School as an English teacher and an advisor to student publications, and Northwest High School in the same capacity. He went on to retire from IPS Broad Ripple High School in 2000. At Broad Ripple High School he also served as the chairman of the English Department, and the director of student publications.Jimmie was very proud of his teaching accomplishments, receiving several awards including the Ella Sengenberger Indiana Journalism Teacher of the Year (IHSPA), the Gold Key Award (Columbia Scholastic Press Association, Columbia University), and the National Scholastic Press Association Achievement Award. In 1999, he was awarded Life Membership by Indiana High School Press Association, and eventually becoming the president of the association in 1964.

When Jimmie wasn’t teaching, he enjoyed reading, spending time with friends and traveling.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Judy McClain; nieces, Jennifer (Craig) Daugherty, Diana (Paul) Doell, and Julie (Brian) Janes; several great-nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He is preceded in passing by his parents Nathalee and Oscar McClain; and his brother, Charles E. McClain.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46229), where a funeral service will begin at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Indiana Youth Group.
