James Lee Whiten of Avon, IN, passed away on September 28, 2026, at the age of 83. He was born in Indianapolis, IN, on March 6, 1943, to parents, James T. and Hazel (Baker) Whiten.
Lee was a Ben Davis High School graduate and earned a Business degree from Indiana University in Bloomington. He worked for 35 years in the real estate industry as Senior Vice President of the Residential Division of the F.C. Tucker Company, and as a private commercial and residential real estate developer. His career brought him much joy as he set and achieved goals and made many life-long friends. He will be most remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, friendly smile and easy laugh. He loved cars, water skiing, snow skiing and traveling – even visiting all 50 states in the U.S. by the time he was 75. He was a regular member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church and also participated in weekly Bible study through the national Bible Study Fellowship program.
Lee was dedicated to his family and friends. He was a loving husband to Candy West for over 30 years until her death from breast cancer in 2019. He is survived by his sister, Carol Dolder; children, Scott (Mariel) Whiten; Renee Lopez (her fiancé Simon Whittle); Melissa (Thomas) Brown; stepson, Ben (Stacey) West; daughter-in-law Jodie Harper; and 10 grandchildren – Brianna Lopez, Alex Whiten, Millie Brown, Tess Brown, Bailey West, Teagen West, Liam West, Rowan West, Tristen West, Aerial West; and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Candy West; son, James Edward Whiten; stepsons, Chris and Drew West; and baby granddaughter, Grace Harper Whiten.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Lee’s honor may be made to the American Lung Association, American Cancer Society or St. Christopher’s Catholic Church.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 11am-1pm, with a funeral service immediately following at 1pm, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (9700 Allisonville Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46250). Father Mike Welch will officiate.
