James W. 'Jim' Evans

James W. "Jim" Evans 87, Indianapolis, IN, died Monday December 26 at St. Francis Hospital due to complications from prolonged illness. He was born July 16, 1924 to William and Alice (Burkhart) Evans in Troy, TN. Raised in Obion County, TN, Jim graduated from Hornbeak High School in 1943. He worked for U.S. Rubber (Uniroyal) for 32 years, retiring in 1977. Jim was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman. His love of fishing took him from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and he won the Indianapolis Star's "Big Fish Award" in 1976 for catching a 16.5 inch, 1 lb. 14 oz. Silver Bass. He was an extremely enthusiastic gardener and supplied his family and friends with fresh produce from his beloved garden. Jim loved life, he had a curiosity about everything and was quite a trivia buff. His wealth of knowledge was outstanding, resulting in hours of entertaining conversation. Jim was preceded in death by both parents; brothers, Samuel Wallace Evans, Dale Evans and sister, Esther Jean Evans. Jim was an active member of Grace Evangelical Church and enjoyed the activities of the OWLS (Older, Wiser, Loving Saints). He had many good times and fellowship there. Jim is survived by his daughter, Sharon E. Doone and son-in-law, Lawrence J. Doone, Sr.; granddaughter, Tracy M. Johnson; step-grandson, Lawrence J. Doone, Jr. and step-granddaughter, Cynthia A. Doone; sister, Wilba Doris Sallade; three great-granddaughters, one great-great granddaughter and two nephews. Services for Jim will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Flanner and Buchanan-Memorial Park, with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 30. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contribution may be made to the Humane Society of Indianapolis.
